And starting an online business isn’t as complicated as people make it out to be. Our world’s changed.

Most local businesses have an online store.

You can find anything you need on the Internet.

And everyday, more and more physical stores launch a website.

We can buy our groceries online, work from anywhere in the world, and so much more.

Gone are the days where you HAVE to go shopping in-store.

Why drive to the grocery store when you can have the items shipped to your house?

There are even options for curbside pickup now.

And as the world goes further and further into a more and more digital age, local businesses will be left behind.

There’s no need for a physical store on every corner or in every town or major city.

And consumers aren’t going to wait for your business to catch up to the current digital times.

Not when technologically advanced companies are already onto the next thing.

AI, virtual reality, and automation are already hitting the digital scene. And customers love it.

So if you’ve been thinking it’s time to move your business online, then not only do you need to do it. But you need to do it asap.

The faster you move and exceed your customers’ expectations, the faster your business will succeed.

Why’s an Online Business Important?

Think about it this way. It’s now a rare occurrence someone will drive by your shop or store and decide to go inside.

And not only that, there are so many stores to choose from and so many products to buy. Our choices are endless.

We’re constantly being offered new products and services hitting the market. So how do we decide where to spend our money?

An online presence will help.

You’re able to get a better idea of what a business is about when you can search for them online.

People don’t want to waste their time anymore.

They want to know who you are. What you’re selling. And they want it all packed into a clean and easy to read website.

In the US alone, we’re expecting to have 300 million online shoppers in 2023. That’s 91% of the entire country’s population! – Statista

We love to search the Web, browse social media, and buy random things online.

Companies that move their businesses online are guaranteed to see an increase in revenue.

So, if you want to do what’s best for your business in the long run, it’s time to start thinking about making a change – go online!

The internet is here to stay. Things are only going to get more advanced from here.

Things to Consider When Starting an Online Business

Great, so you’ve decided it’s time to get your business online.

But what exactly does that mean and what do you need to think about?

I’m going to lay out several factors to consider when it comes to building a website for yourself or business next.

Starting an Online Business: How-To

Now we’re going to cover the things you need to do when starting an online business.

  1. Choose a Domain Name:
    • When you start your online business, you’ll have to come up with a domain name.

You can use Domain websites like GoDaddy or Namecheap to see if your domain name’s available.

The domain name is what people will type in a browser and how customers will search for your website on search engines like Google.

For example, if your business’s name is “Lucy’s Cupcakes,” then you’d want your domain name to be www.lucyscupcakes.com.

.Com domains are the most commonly used domains, and it’s recommended to go with those.

Do not choose something like .online just so you can get your dream domain. It could hurt your chances of being found online.

And if your desired domain name isn’t available, try something very close to your original business’ name.

Your domain name should give site visitors a clear impression of what to expect from your website.
  2. Pick Your Website Platform:
    • Now that you have your domain name, you can choose where you’d like to build your website.

Business owners who don’t have a lot of time to dedicate to building a website should choose platforms like Squarespace and Wix.

While nothing is wrong with these online platforms, they limit your SEO capabilities.

They also don’t leave a lot of room for customization.

WordPress allows you to create any site no matter how complicated. And if you don’t plan on hiring someone to help you create the website, then go with an easier platform like Squarespace.

But it’s always BEST to own your own website and content. Instead of giving control Squarespace and Wix. So hire someone if you need help building one.
  3. Write On Your Website Copy:
    • You’re going to have to get someone or do it yourself to write your website copy (content).

Every page will need written content of some sort.

Your homepage should be an overview of your company as a whole and what people should expect.

The About page should go into who you are as a company and your core beliefs.

And make sure you spend time working on these elements because site visitors will read about your business.

Try and keep the copy short, sweet, descriptive, and fun to read!
  4. Keep It Consistent:
    • Make sure your website is consistent on every page.

You don’t want your homepage to look completely different from your services page.

Choose the same colors to be repeated on every page and make sure the text has the same format.

You want to leave a great impression with website visitors that want to know what your business is about.

And when you aren’t consistent with your design, it can lead to a bad impression.
  5. Make Your Website Responsive:
    • One of the most important things you should do when building your website is to make it responsive.

Users should be able to access your website from mobile devices and desktops.

You’ll want to make sure that your website will format correctly on each device. Four out of five Americans are now online shoppers.

More than half have made purchases using a mobile device. So make sure your website has a fast load speed, is easy to navigate, and is mobile-friendly.

Designing your website can either be a fun experience or tedious. If you aren’t able to put in the time and work needed to create an outstanding site, then consider hiring outside help.
